Sunk, Hohentauern, Niedere Tauern, Steiermark, Österreich
The Sunk represents an old magnesite and graphite mining area, which was first documented around 1640, intensified in the 19th century for steel production, and processed in Trieben. Due to the exposed location of the mining industry, a small settlement soon developed, which was expanded with the beginning of industrialization and the expansion of mining. The first workers' apartments in the Sunk were six two-story log houses in the form of workers' barracks for 97 workers. The barracks were only boarded up, and the joints covered with moss. Simpler boys' houses were built for unmarried miners. At the beginning of the 20th century, a cable car was built through the Sunk.
With the later separation of residential units for employees and workers, this differentiation also made its way into residential construction. Today's mining settlement, directly near the town of Hohentauern, was built in the 1960s and consists of single-family houses with gable roofs and an associated garden for growing vegetables. The building plans were made available to the miners willing to build by the mining company, which created a uniform house type in the settlement.
Mining stopped in 1991, today there are only a few buildings here; the actual miners' settlement has been demolished. The history is documented in the mining museum in the Hohentauern community center.
Magnesite mining was resumed on a trial basis in July 2013.
