Other/historical names associated with this locality:

A former trap rock-aggregates deposit/quarry. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.

This First Watchung basalt traprock quarry retains its original name and is seldomly referred to by any of the owners' names. The quarry was approximately 2 miles (3.1 km) north of Paterson.

The quarry was opened in 1901 by James A. Sowerbutt, who ran it until his death in 1916. His son-in-law, Abraham Vandermade and his son, James Vandermade, took over the operation until it was sold to Warren Brothers in 1969. In the early 1980s, Tilcon New Jersey, Inc., purchased the quarry. Mineralization has been found in the interior of pillows, in junction pockets between pillows, in veins, and within cavities of the amygdaloid. The quarry pit is currently being filled in for a future housing development.

The Orange Mountain Basalt is a dark-greenish-gray to greenish-black basalt composed mostly of calcic plagioclase (typically An65) and clinopyroxene (augite and pigeonite); crystals are generally less than 1 mm (0.04 inch) long. Consists of three major flows. The flows are separated in places by a weathered zone or by a thin, up to 3-meter (10-feet) thick bed of red siltstone (not shown on map) or volcaniclastic rock. The lowest flow is generally massive and has widely spaced curvilinear joints; columnar joints in the lowest flow become more common toward the northeast. The middle flow is massive or has columnar jointing. The lower part of the uppermost flow has pillow structures; the upper part has pahoehoe flow structures. Tops and bottoms of flow layers are vesicular. Maximum thickness is about 182 meters (597 feet). Local rocks include the Orange Mountain Basalt (Watchung Basalt).
