Uranium ore prospects, excavated by Somiren in the period 1957-1963 on the western slope of Monte Toff (Monte Tov) (2050 m), within the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence of the Permian Val Gardena Sandstone Formation (Arenarie della Val Gardena). The uranium mineralisation is confined to the grey sandstone series that contains dispersed organic matter and anthracite aggregates and, although discontinuos can be followed for about 6 km along the hydrographic left flank of Rendena Valley from Caderzone Village till Darè Village.
This deposit had the potential to become a second pole for Uranium ore extraction in Italy, following Val Vedello-Novazza main pole.
Nine sites of investigation are reported, they are from North to South: Pertiche (38m), Casinelle (140 m),Pranebli (530 m), Palastro 1(975 m), Palastro 2 (70m), Palastro 3 (about 600m), Palastro 4 (122 m), Mozzoli (90m), Pradel (480 m, but without reaching the ore bodies)-(numbers in brackets are total length of the galleries excavated at each site). The most important galleries were excavated at Palastro 1 (1305-1320 m a.s.l.); the other galleries were excavated between 1260 and 1350 m a.s.l.
Prospecting in this area definitively ended in 1978.
Provided coordinates are referred to Palastro area, based on topographic maps, and memories of previous visits in the late 1970s, but still unchecked by GPS, therefore to be regarded as approximate. Ravagnani 1974 has good location maps and itinerary descriptions.
