Broad Arrow is 38 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie on the Goldfields Highway. Gold was discovered at the site by Charles Reison in 1893. There was the inevitable rush to the alluvial patches, and from 1895 to 1900 the rich Hill End and Golden Arrow mines were operating . A little later the Oversight is also a rich mine.
By the 1920's, the town had been largely abandoned when the rich gold had run out. The site is now home to a hotel which remains from 1900. Large abandoned pits from the Norton Goldfield's Paddington operations exist immediately east and west of the town. More minor historic workings occur across several kilometres to the north-west.
Gold mines in the Broad Arrow area sit within the major regional Bardoc Tectonic Zone which roughly follows the Goldfields Highway from Kalgoorlie to Menzies. This consists of variably deformed mafic and ultramafic volcanic rocks, felsic volcanic-sedimentary rocks, felsic-intermediate porphyry intrusions, and differentiated mafic-ultramafic intrusions.
The zone is squeezed between two granitoids , during regional east north-east to west south-west shortening, resulting in a narrow synclinorium, bound by granitic rocks of the Goongarrie-Mt Pleasant Anticline to the west, and the Scotia-Kanowna Anticline to the east.
Major north north-west shear zones and multiple cross structures influence the location of gold in major shears. The Black Flag Fault heads north north-east, and is a major influence on gold distribution to the north of Broad Arrow.
