To reach the South Star mine take a track north north-west from the intersection of the Goldfields Highway and Broad Arrow-Ora Banda Road. After two kilometres at the Valhalla mine, is a crossroad, turn left and head along a track north-west for 3 kilometres. Little remains at South Star other than a shaft. The lease adjoined the Railway Venture mine which has shared a similar fate. The track continues to the Bulletin Mine.
Information was found from 1898 to 1909. Payable gold and wash (being deep alluvial gold) was found in 1898. Owners are H. Brens, J. Hooper, G. Gillman, P.M. Dodd, and financially Von Arnheim, A.W.C. Dunlop, and Killington. Several rich crushings came from the mine over the next two years.
Bewick Moreing and Co took a short lived option over the mine and Railway Venture early 1899. Then the lease was purchased by the Northern Battery Company in mid 1899.
Roberts and party as tributors put through a crushing in 1902. Williamson and party put through a crushing in 1904. Early 1909, the Mines Inspector states the location is deserted. Shortly after O'Connor and Young from Kookynie and Chant (surnames) take up the mine but no more is heard.
