Discovered by prospectors A.C. McDonald and W. Cross, at a site now opposite the Broad Arrow Tavern, on the east side of the Goldfields Highway.

In the 1890's it was the richest mine in the area. At the time, 1 tonne to 1 ounce or better was considered a very profitable mine. In its first year of operation in 1895 under the prospectors, 263 tonnes was crushed for 4,931 ounces of gold. This equated to 8000 pounds worth of gold, and in 1896 the lease was sold to a French syndicate called the New Austral Company for 25,000 pounds.

McDonald and Cross were instantly rich by the standards of the day. They spent the money just as fast, and in subsequent years both are found separately at small shows in the district, making ends meet, but they never found another Hill End.

Initially, stone was found hung together with gold, right through the reef at the 60-foot level. Two shafts were on the lease. There was a three head battery, later expanded to 10 head. By June 1898, the syndicate had crushed 5017 tonnes of ore for 13 636 ounces of gold, worth 53 000 pounds. Three mine workers were arrested at the end of 1898 for gold stealing and received 3 months terms of imprisonment each. William Lewis was the mine manager for several years. The syndicate closed the mine in 1902, having extracted all the easily won gold.

In 1903, tributers Griffiths and party are at the mine. A second tributing party was also at the mine called Rea and mate. In 1916, Callan and R.G. Ardagh M.L.A. sink a new shaft on the western side of the reef, accessing now large quantities of low-grade ore. In 1933, T. Willoughby and party put through some small crushings.

The site now contains an abandoned open pit from recent decades, but more information is needed. Nearby is a 900-acre lease, which the public can pay a small fee to metal detect, and bush camp. More of these are needed.
