Gold was discovered at Bullfinch by Charlie Jones, who unearthed a rich reef under 6 feet of clay in 1909. A town quickly developed at the site, 35 kilometres north of Southern Cross. The discovery of gold in the area led to a gold-rush, speculating boom, as leases were pegged in all directions, companies floated, and money invested from shareholders on properties with no proof if gold existed. Within a year the boom had bust, with many people losing their life savings.

The original find however just east of the town continued to be developed as Bullfinch Proprietary. In the first six months the mine produced 964 tonnes of ore for an incredible 11 117 ounces of gold. Gold grades over time declined until the mine closed in 1923.

Shortly after, the area was developed for wheat farming. A syndicate called Copperhead re-opened the mine in 1932, before closing in 1942 due to a lack of labour. Western Mining Corporation re-opened the mine in 1952, and at its peak the town had 1500 people. The mine closed again in 1963.

During this period Bullfinch went through cycles of boom and busts. In 1987, Barmine Pty Ltd again re-opened the mine, but this time Bullfinch saw little benefit. The workforce were transient single men living in a donga camp on the outskirts of town, which did little to improve the fate of the old houses in town, or develop public facilities.

At the time of writing there is no mining at Bullfinch. A few residents save it from being classed as a ghost-town. There is a pub, and the main street is well maintained. It is well worth a visit as a quiet base to explore the old gold workings in the region.
