Complex Precambrian rocks underlie Forest County, which are obscured by thick glacial drift, lakes, forests and marshes. Scattered outcrops and drill core reveal older gneissic terrane overlain by Lower Proterozoic meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks representing a sequence caught up between colliding continents and deformed during the 1.8 billion year old Penokean Orogeny. Several massive sulfide deposits are known in the county, including the world-class Crandon deposit. Their discovery is based almost solely on geophysical and drill core records - outcrops are sparse. In the southeastern corner of the County, cleaner quartzite of McCaslin Mountain are exposed in monadnocks. The extensive glacial drift in the County can provide some interesting samples to the diligent collector, including "float" copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
