Known among the Italian collectors as the "Gradoli pozzolana quarry", it is opened in the so-called "Tufi di Poggio Pinzo", a stratigraphic sequence mainly consisting of strombolian fall deposits ranging in size from ash to black scoriaceous lapilli and whitish pumices, and of hydromagmatic fall and surge deposits constituted by vescicular tuffs, fine- and coarse-grained tuffs with sandwave structures. The chemical composition varies from tephrite at the base of the stratigraphic sequence to phonolitic trachyte at its top.
