Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA


Canaan is a town incorporated 1739. It originally included the town of North Canaan, which split from the town of Canaan in 1858. Note that North Canaan includes the village of Canaan (formerly known as Canaan Depot) and sometimes referred to as "Canaan Village" to distinguish it from the town of Canaan. The entire town of Canaan is often casually referred to as "Falls Village" (which is the principal population center in the town of Canaan) or "South Canaan" for the same reason.

Canaan is host to a few marble quarries; on Battle Hill within Falls Village, or on the east side of the unnamed hill just west of Sand Road. The two quarries on Sand Road are still active as of 2012.

Specimens labelled as just "Canaan" without a more specific locality are more likely from the town of North Canaan because the village of Canaan is the largest local population center in that town and is closer to the more numerous and largest and longest active marble quarries.

The locality coordinates are for the intersection of U. S. Route 7 and state Route 126 in Falls Village.

Geologically, the low-lying northwestern part of Canaan, and the Wangum Lake Brook valley in the southeast, is underlain by the Cambrian Stockbridge Marble and Ordovician Walloomsac Marble and Schist. Canaan Mountain, dominating the northeast part of town, is underlain by Cambrian Canaan Mountain Schist, which was thrust over the marbles. Proterozoic gneiss with some Cambrian Dalton Formation quartzite, gneiss and schist underlies Cobble Hill and the rugged terrain in the southern part of town.
