The deposit has produced resources, including 6,380 tons of silver (average grade: 193 g/t), 71,300 tons of lead (average grade: 1.99 %), and 92,200 tons of zinc (average grade: 2.37 %). The mineral-bearing strata consist of the lower Permian Shoushangou Formation (characterized by tuffaceous siltstone, sandstone, siltstone, and slate), and the Upper Jurassic Manketou Ebo Formation (comprising tuff, subrhyolite, and dacite). A total of 45 economic orebodies have been discovered, primarily as concealed deposits that are structurally controlled. These orebodies include two types: one within faults of the Permian Shoushangou Formation and the other in the contact zone between the Shoushangou Formation and Variscan ophiolite. The main alterations include the following: (1) magmatic intrusion, which caused partial alteration of the peridotite rock mass to form planar shape serpentinization; (2) local formation of zonal silicification, pyrite mineralization, hematitization and carbonation near the contact zone with sandstone; and (3) hydrothermal fluid migration along the ore-controlling structure to form linear silicification, kaolinization, pyrite mineralization, and sericitization.
The superlarge Huaaobaote Ag–Pb–Zn deposit is located on the western slope of the southern Great Xing’an Range (SGXR). The deposit includes four ore blocks, namely, ore blocks I, II, III, and V. Except for the no. I orebody of ore block I, which is hosted in the contact zone between the Carboniferous serpentinized harzburgite and the Permian siltstone, the other orebodies all occur as veins controlled by faults.

The Huaaobaote deposit in the SGXR is primarily characterized by Ag–Pb–Zn mineralization, associated with Sn, Cu, and Sb. As of 2009, the proven reserves of Sn and Cu were 14,000t and 57,000 t, respectively (Inner Mongolia Yulong Mining Company Limited, 2009). Notably, the newly discovered 1118 Highland deposit in the Huaaobaote ore field has proven Sn reserves of 27,000 t and Cu reserves of 121,000 t (Inner Mongolia Yulong Mining Company Limited, 2023), indicating significant Sn–Cu metallogenic potential in this region. The Huaaobaote area is predominantly comprise of the Lower Permian Shoushangou Formation (marine clastic rocks), the Lower–Middle Permian Dashizhai Formation (marine intermediate–acidic volcanic and clastic rocks), the Middle Jurassic Wanbao Formation (continental clastic rocks), the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous volcanic–volcaniclastic rocks, and the Neogene Wuchagou Formation (basalt), Baogedawula Formation (clastic rocks), and Quaternary deposits. Magmatic activity in the Huaaobaote area peaked during two major periods: the Variscan and the Yanshanian. Variscan intrusions are primarily composed of diorite porphyry, emplaced as stocks or dikes in the eastern part of the area, with a crystallization age concentrated around ∼ 298 Ma. Yanshanian granitic rocks, mainly consisting of granite porphyry and fine-grained granite, are predominantly exposed in the southern part of the area. Ophiolites occur as tectonic slices distributed near the Meilaote Fault and other NE- to NEE-trending faults.
