Silicious oolites from the Mines member of the Gatesburg formation. These outcrops are credited as being the best example of a silicious oolite since the late 1890's. The oolites are believed to have been originally calcareous oolites that were replaced with silica rich waters during later tectonic events. Many outcrops in the State College area have now been developed and are no longer accessible.
