Sandnes municipality covers a land area of 285,8 km². The western part lies in the relatively flat coastal plain of Jæren, and is mostly covered by glacial sediments. East for the N/S trending Gandsfjorden, the topology is dominated by hills and intermittent valleys and lakes trending NE/SW and N/S, which is consistent with the regional fault systems. The hills becomes gradually higher towards the east, they are 250-350 m just east of Gandsfjorden and increases to 671 m at Bynuten at the border with Gjesdal towards the southeast.

The geology is dominated by migmatic gneisses and granites/granodiorites of Sveconorwegian origin. To the west some outcrops with phyllite of Caledonian origin are known. There are few good mineral localities here, although nice quartz crystals associated with hematite and rutile was found in Caledonian granitic rocks in the early 1980s in conjunction with housing development at Forus towards the border to Stavanger in the northwestern part of the municipality.

Sandnes includes the former municipality of Høyland which was located at the innermost end of the Gandsfjorden in the western part of present-day Sandnes. Høyland existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965.
