Neudorf is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 September 2010, it is part of the town Harzgerode.
Historical lead-silver mining area.
Main ores were argentiferous galena and freibergite, included in calcite-quartz-siderite veins of the Neudorf-Straßberg vein system ('Neudorf-Straßberger Gangzug').
These veins actually were mineralized fault zones in the Harzgerode complex, forming a southeast to northwest running succession of orebodies that were frequently interrupted by barren rocks.
The mines reached their highest productivity during the early 19th century, when Zincken (for whom the mineral Zinkenite was named) was employed as director by the 'Anhaltinische Berg- und Hüttenwerke', the company owning the mines at that time. In 1903, the mines were closed.
Neudorf is famous for the fine galena and bournonite specimens that were recovered from the Meiseberg and Pfaffenberg mines during their active working period.
The galena crystals, typically showing combinations of cubic, octahedral and dodecahedral faces - the so-called Neudorf habit - did reach impressing sizes of up to 12 cm along the edges.
Also among the extraordinary specimens were bournonites up to 8 cm, tetrahedrites up to 5 cm and scheelites on wolframite crystals up to 10 cm in length.
A fine suite of historical Neudorf specimens is permanently on display in the museum at Bernburg Castle (located at Bernburg, about 40 km NW of Halle). Neudorf is located about 4 km SSW of Harzgerode.
