Ancient lead mines in the central part of the Mechernich lead and zinc deposit. The main ore minerals Galena, Sphalerite, and Cerussite are disseminated or occur in nodular impregnations (Knotten) and veinlets in the lower Triassic sandstones and conglomerates (Middle Bunter Sandstone). From Roman times until 1957 the deposit was worked from numerous mines and open cuts south and southwest of Mechernich.

The larger workings of the last mining period are in order from SW to NE (about 6 km distance):

- Westfeld, underground mining (ENE of Kall)
- Kallmuther Berg, open cut (east of Kalenberg)
- Virginia, open cut (south of Strempt)
- Virginia-Nord / Strempt, underground mining (with Reßhecke, caved area) (SE of Strempt)
- Bachrevier, open cut (SW of Mechernich)
- Peterheide (SW of Mechernich)
- Günnersdorf, open cut (south of Mechernich)
- Haardt (south of Mechernich)

Virginia open cut and Kallmuther Berg open cut were still accessible in 1995. The mineralization observed at all these sites is essentially the same.
