Named by J.L. Jambor, A.C. Roberts, J.D. Grice, T.C. Birkett, L.A. Groat, and S. Zajac in 1998 in honor of Richard Geren (15 July 1917, Columbus, Ohio, USA - 3 September 2002, Oromocto, New Brunswick, Canada), former executive vice-president of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. He initiated and supported the exploration program of the Strange Lake deposit.

Type Occurrence of Gerenite-(Y)
General Appearance of Type Material:
Intergrowths containing gerenite-(Y) are megascopically recognizable as sparsely disseminated anhedral masses that are typically 1-2 cm across.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Type specimens, including the holotype (NMCC 67354), are in the Systematic Reference Series housed at the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa, as part of the National Mineral Collection of Canada. The single-crystal fragment used for the X-ray structure determination (Groat 1998) is in the M.Y. Williams Museum at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
