Named in 2009 by Werner H. Paar, Mark A. Cooper, Frank C. Hawthorne, Elizabeth Moffatt, Mickey E. Gunter, Andrew C. Roberts, and Pete J. Dunn in honour of Richard S. W. Braithwaite [1930-], a British mineral spectroscopist and professor at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
