Anna I coal dump

The Anna I dump is the oldest and largest coal waste heap in the Aachen region and was deposited between 1854 and 1964. The extraction of coal in the Anna mine (in operation from 1854 to 1983) resulted in three mine dumps. The Anna I dump self-ignited sometime during the 1950s and has been thermally active up to the present day.
The neighbouring Anna II dump shows much less self-ignition processes.
