The Waimate District is at the far south of the Canterbury Region, bordering the Otago Region. It encompasses the coastline, and hills half-way to the Southern Alps. The main town is Waimate itself with about 3500 people of the 7000 in the district.
Waimate does not see many tourists. A general guide is the less tourists, the better the local tourist bureau's website is. Fossils can be found at Haka Valley near the quarry, Bluecliffs, Benmore, Hakataramea, Waihoarunga, and Waikao Downs. Eight hundred moa skeletons came from Kapua. Maori rock art sites can be seen at Maungati, and Takiroa. Bushtown Heritage Park, fishing, hunting, walking, and the introduced Bennetts Wallabies are some other things promoted.
The southern border of the district is the Waitaki River, inland to Lake Benmore, and the northern boundary is the Pareora River.
