Geology: The district of Giromagny includes three distinct exploitation sectors which are Plancher-les-Mines, Auxelles-Haut, and Giromagny-Lepuix-Gy, concealed in the volcanic Viséennes series (Culm) of the southern Vosges.
These volcano-sedimentary lands are essentially pyroclastic, moderately basic, with discontinuous intercalation of homogeneous or brecciated flows with rhyolitic, trachytic and trachy-labradoritic elements.
The veins of this district are mainly epithermal (cold) polymetallic type, consisting of lower deposition temperatures as for many veins in the southern Vosges. Many baryte-fluorite occurrences can be attached to it. They are in direct relationship with the Vosges Fault (Wattwiller-Orschwiller-Bergheim).
History: No documents attest to the beginnings of the exploitation in this district. But the works are probably already active during the fourteenth century. Thirion (1935) wrote that they probably began in the tenth century.
The region was under Habsburg rule in the 14th century and exploited the important silver, copper and lead mines: Teutschgrund, Pfennigthurm, and Saint-Pierre in Giromagny but also Saint-Jean and Gesellschaft in Auxelles-Haut as well as others even less important. Exploitations have reached their apogee just before the thirty-year war (1648). After this war, having destroyed the whole mining installations, until the beginning of the 20th century, the recoveries and the abandons were numerous.
