The Hurunui District is in the northern part of the Canterbury Region, with the Kaikoura District to the north and Selwyn/Waimakariri districts to the south. The district covers 8660.43 square kilometres, with a population of around 13 000 people, scattered across several small towns.
The district is mainly hilly, with some plains around the Culverden and Amberley areas. Its southern border is the Rakakiri River, while northern border is just below Oaro. The district stretches from the coast inland to the border of the West Coast, Tasman and Marlborough regions.
The district is largely rural. Wineries and foody outlets occur in the Waipara Valley, while Hanmer Springs is New Zealand's largest thermal pool resort.
Please note the northern border of the district does not match the Marlborough border, with Hurunui infringing into the region by a few kilometres along its entire length. The upper Lewis Valley is part of the Buller District. Neither have affected any Mindat listings so far.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Late/Upper Cretaceous : 97.0 ± 3.1 Ma to 93.4 ± 1.9 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
