Köppen climate type:
The large Fontao mine has an historic production of 1.4Mt @ 180 g/t WO3, 200 g/t Sn in the open pit and 0.3Mt @ 0.28 % WO3, 900 g/t Sn underground. The total current resource estimates are near 5,000 t of Sn and W. This deposit is located in an isolated, sub-circular, zoned, ring-shaped granitic complex cropping out in an area of ca. 0.6 km2 and intruding the metamorphic rocks of the Schist Domain in the GTMZ.
The Fontao (W-Sn) deposit consists of a NE-SW trending quartz vein bundle centred on a small (1km2) granitic complex. This complex intruded Precambrian ortho-gneisses, para-gneisses and schists. The epizonal zoned ring-shaped granitic complex crops out along an area of 0.6 km2 and it is divided in four different intrusive units. Here, the exogranite is represented by three external concentric and ring-shaped intrusions of a biotite-rich porphyritic granite with a gradation from fine to coarse matrix texture towards the centre of the complex. The endogranite is a fine-grained muscovite-rich granite with a porphyritic texture with large crystals of albite in a fine-grained groundmass.
