Hampshire is a ceremonial and historic county in southern England, United Kingdom, bordered by Dorset and Wiltshire to the west, Berkshire to the north, Surrey and West Sussex to the east, and the English Channel to the south. It covers an area of approximately 3,800 km² and includes a varied landscape of chalk downland, lowland heaths, river valleys, and an indented coastline. Major rivers include the Test, Itchen, Avon, and Loddon, many of which are internationally noted for their clear chalk-stream character.
Geologically, Hampshire is dominated by Cretaceous and Palaeogene sedimentary rocks, forming part of the Wessex–Wealden Basin system. Extensive areas of Upper Cretaceous chalk form the Hampshire Downs, including parts of the South Downs and the rolling chalk landscapes of north and central Hampshire. These are flanked by Lower Cretaceous sands and clays and overlain in places by Palaeogene sands, clays, and gravels, particularly in the Hampshire Basin. To the south-east, the New Forest is underlain by younger sands and gravels, producing heathland landscapes, while Quaternary alluvial deposits occur along river valleys and coastal lowlands.
Hampshire’s mineral and extractive heritage reflects its sedimentary geology. Quarrying of chalk and limestone has long supplied materials for lime, cement, and building stone, while sand and gravel extraction from river terraces has been important for construction. Clay deposits supported brick, tile, and pottery manufacture, particularly in the New Forest area. Flint from the chalk was widely used for tools and historic building. Metallic mining is minimal, but the county’s industrial minerals have been economically and historically significant.
Administratively, Hampshire is divided into a mix of districts, boroughs, and unitary authorities, with Winchester traditionally regarded as the county town and historic capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. Hampshire has a strong historical and cultural identity shaped by its rivers, ports, and long association with maritime and agricultural activity. Its geology has strongly influenced settlement, land use, and landscape development, particularly through the distribution of chalk downs, fertile valleys, and heathlands.
