The exposure of the Barton Formation (Eocene clays, approx 36 million years old) at Barton-on-Sea is a rich site for fossil shells, mostly gastropods (eg turritella) and bivalves, but mammal bones and shark teeth are also found here.
Gypsum crystals and iron sulphates are found where iron-rich material has oxidised, and gypsum crystals to a few centimetres can be found in the clays, usually towards the top of the dried out collapsed areas.
