The name “Bergen Hill” has long been applied to a section of the topographic ridge underlain by the Palisades diabase on what used to be called “Bergen Neck”, the peninsula between the Hackensack and Hudson Rivers now occupied by Hudson County, New Jersey. It extends from Bayonne northward to an undefined distance north of Fairview and Cliffside Park in southernmost Bergen County. This is the portion of the ridge, opposite lower and mid-town Manhattan, that has been dissected and perforated by numerous road and railroad cuts and tunnels. There were also some small quarries in the diabase. In the Bergen Hill part of the ridge, the diabase cliffs sit back from the Hudson River. The strip of land between the cliffs and the river is relatively flat in most places and became occupied by railroad yards, ferry terminals and assorted waterfront industry.
North of Fairview, Cliffside Park and the southern part of Edgewater, the location of the Susquehanna Railroad tunnel, the name “Bergen Hill” fades away and the ridge is commonly called “the Palisades”. This is also the area where the prominent Palisades cliffs get closer to the river, limiting railroad and commercial use.
For specimens where the county is not specified, there is a Mindat locality named "Bergen Hill, Bergen Co. & Hudson Co., New Jersey, USA".
This file was created to cover any occurrences on Bergen Hill in Hudson County that are not attributed to a specific municipality or populated place, and to document the historical significance of Bergen Hill in the geological literature.
