East Sussex is a ceremonial county in south-east England, United Kingdom, bordered by Kent to the east, West Sussex to the west, Greater London to the north-west, and the English Channel to the south. It covers an area of approximately 1,790 km² and includes a varied landscape of coastal cliffs, rolling chalk downs, wooded ridges, and low-lying river valleys. Major rivers include the Ouse, Cuckmere, and Rother, while the coastline is noted for its dramatic chalk headlands and shingle beaches.
Geologically, East Sussex is dominated by Cretaceous sedimentary rocks forming part of the Wealden Anticline, a broad east–west-trending structure created during Alpine-related tectonic uplift. The southern part of the county is defined by the South Downs, composed mainly of Upper Cretaceous chalk forming a prominent escarpment and coastal cliffs, including the iconic Seven Sisters. North of the Downs lies the Weald, underlain by Lower Cretaceous sandstones, siltstones, and clays, which give rise to a varied landscape of ridges and vales. Younger Palaeogene deposits and widespread Quaternary gravels and coastal sediments occur locally along river valleys and the coast.
East Sussex has a notable industrial and extractive heritage linked to its geology. The Weald was a major centre of the iron industry from Roman times through the medieval and early modern periods, with iron ore extracted from clay ironstones and smelted using charcoal derived from local woodlands. Quarrying of chalk, sandstone, and clay has been important for building materials, lime production, bricks, and tiles, while sand and gravel have been extracted from river terraces. Flint from the chalk was widely used in historic construction and remains a characteristic building material.
Administratively, East Sussex is divided into district and borough councils, with Lewes traditionally regarded as the county town. The county has a strong cultural identity shaped by its coastal position, historic towns, and rural landscapes. Much of its distinctive scenery and settlement pattern reflects the underlying geology, particularly the contrast between the chalk South Downs and the wooded sandstones and clays of the Weald, making East Sussex a classic example of landscape development controlled by sedimentary geology in southern England.
