Underground gypsum mine operated by British Gypsum Ltd which opened in 1963 using a 'drill-and-blast' method of extraction combined with the 'room-and-pillar' mining method. Accessed by Land Rover using a 420 meter long inclined drift. It was originally connected to the Mountfield Mine via an aerial ropeway for material transport, but was later replaced by a 5 km long conveyor system in 1989. The gypsum is located in the Jurassic Purbeck beds. The Brightling/ Mountfield reserves are the largest gypsum reserves in the UK.
