Nazaré is a picturesque seaside village on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, in the Leiria District. Known for its charming whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and vibrant fishing culture, it has a rich maritime history. The village is famous worldwide for its giant waves, attracting surfers from around the globe, especially at Praia do Norte. Nazaré also offers scenic viewpoints, such as the Sitio, perched on a cliff above the town, providing panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
(1) The cliffs near the Nazaré lighthouse exhibit a succession of rocks approximately 90 million years old (Upper Cretaceous). These limestones mark the emergence of an ancient coastal area, contemporaneous with changes in local geography, relief and coastline. As sea levels lowered, the limestone became exposed at the surface, and corrosion began, forming caves and other cavities, the infilling of which is still visible today. At the same time, volcanic activity occurred, resulting in lava flows and associated feeder dikes. These volcanic rocks outcrop near the Nazaré lighthouse.
