Large blocks (to 25 tons) of native iron were found by Nordenskiöld in 1870 and brought to Sweden as meteorites. It was later discovered that iron occurred as nodules in Tertiary basalt, formed by reduction due to the incorporation of carbon-rich sediments.

The 'iron' is an assemblage of iron and iron carbide (cohenite) and various silicate, sulphide, and oxide inclusions containing highly reduced and iron-rich phases, including fayalite, wüstite, troilite, ulvöspinel, ilmenite, ferriferous pigeonite, and FeO-rich glass (Bird et al., 1981).
