Ordinary chondrite, unequilibrated (H/L3.6; S2; W0)
Witnessed fall, 15 July 1878: 28.5 kg

After some loud detonations in the early afternoon, a single stone was seen to fall. Clearly delineated chondrules, chondrule fragments, isolated silicate grains, Fe-Ni metal and troilite are densely packed within a fine-grained and complex matrix. The range of olivine composition (Fa10-55) indicates a highly unequilibrated chondrite. Textures of the chondrules are quite diverse as well, but are mostly olivine and/or pyroxene rich [BO, PO, PP, BP, RP types are all reported by Lux (1981)]. Undulose extinction in the olivine is due to moderate preterrestrial shock. Some unusual 'white matrix' contains feldspathoids rarely seen in more equilibrated ordinary chondrites. Unusual tiny aggregates with poorly characterized carbonaceous material are also present. Various indicators indicate moderate amounts of preterrestrial aqueous alteration.

Tieschitz is one of only 44 witnessed petrologic type 3 (unequilibrated) ordinary chondrite falls. Furthermore, it is the only meteorite classified as exactly 'H/L3.6' (as of September 2015).
