Lancashire is a historic county in north-west England, UK, extending from the Irish Sea coast inland across lowland plains, river valleys, and upland moorland. The county includes a varied landscape ranging from coastal dunes and estuaries in the west to the elevated ground of the West Pennine Moors and Bowland Fells in the east. Major river systems include the Ribble, Wyre, and Lune, which drain westward to the sea. Although modern administrative boundaries differ, the historic county provides a coherent geographic and geological framework widely used in mineral and locality descriptions.
Geologically, Lancashire lies mainly within the Carboniferous Pennine Basin and is dominated by Millstone Grit and Coal Measures deposited in fluvial, deltaic, and shallow-marine environments. Thick sequences of sandstones, mudstones, siltstones, and coal seams form much of the bedrock, with Millstone Grit producing resistant uplands and escarpments. Coal mining expanded rapidly from the 18th century, supporting iron production, textiles, and urban growth. In addition to coal, the county was an important source of building stone, especially gritstone and sandstone, as well as brick clays and sand and gravel. Quarrying shaped both rural and urban landscapes, leaving numerous disused workings.
Administratively, historic Lancashire has been subdivided and reorganised since the 20th century, with areas now forming parts of Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cumbria, and several unitary authorities. Despite these changes, many geological and mineral localities are still referred to by their historic county association, and Mindat locality usage typically reflects this traditional framework where appropriate, rather than modern administrative boundaries alone.
