Sykes Mine comprises two separate workings located either side of Losterdale Brook in the core of the Sykes Anticline.
Mineralisation occurs in chert breccias some of which coincide with small faults. Mineralisation comprises baryte with a little quartz as the most common minerals, with fluorite, galena and occasionally chalcopyrite together with minor malachite and azurite.
The principal vein is in a fault which is nearly coincident with the axis of the anticline (de Rance, 1873).
The west mine workings comprise a series of small openings located high in a limestone quarry face. These lead to small irregular and ramified workings and are in poor condition.
The east mine workings comprise a level driven ENE on the main vein which was found to be barren after some distance. Mining appears to have been concentrated on a smaller cross-fault heading NNW not far from the adit entrance.
The age of the workings is not known but the deposit is thought to have been worked for two or three short periods between the 16th and 19th century.
