The Forest of Bowland National Landscape is a remote and atmospheric upland landscape in north-west England, covering parts of Lancashire and North Yorkshire. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1964 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, it is valued for its strong sense of wilderness, dark skies, and traditional rural character. The area is dominated by expansive heather moorland, deep river valleys, blanket bog, and scattered stone-built farms and villages, creating one of the most tranquil and least disturbed landscapes in England.
Geologically, the Forest of Bowland is shaped mainly by Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, including sandstones, gritstones, limestones, and shales laid down around 320–340 million years ago. These rocks form the high moorland plateaux and steep-sided cloughs that define the landscape, while underlying limestones influence spring lines and valley development. The area is also noted for its classic examples of folded and faulted Carboniferous strata, which have long been studied by geologists.
