Marmazza Valley, also known as Toppa Valley, is a short valley with a steep slope, surrounded by Cima Stringhet (1899 m) and Punta l'Ottone (1697 m). It is drained by the Marmazza stream with its main tributaries Rio Viezza and Rio Scarpia.
Marmazza valley is known for its gold deposits, located in an extended ore field of quartz veins bearing carbonates, sulphides, gold, and scheelite, crosscuting the main schistosity of the Fobello-Rimella schists.
The study of the trace element content of scheelite and the selective analysis of the REE3+ substituting for Ca in the scheelite lattice have shown a very low Mo content, a very high europium (Eu2+ + Eu3+) and strontium content, and a typical Er3+ < Tb3+ < Dy3+, and Eu3+/Dy3+ > 1 distribution (Rigault, 1956 a, b; Richard et al., 1981; Uspensky et al., 1998).
