Flagstaff Mine; Flagstaff Mountain Pit

A barite pit near the summit Flagstaff Mountain. It mined hydrothermally deposited lenses of baryte on argillite. The mine was originally discovered in 1924 as a silver claim, but little came of this. The first production was in 1961 when 300 tons of barite were produced. Since then a considerably larger amount of barite has been produced.
Geology: The flagstaff mt deposit is located in the lower portion of the black shale belt, in a black pyritic limestone. The barite beds have a gradational contact with the limestone to the s.e., but on the n.w. They are in fault contact with argillite. The barite beds are white to cream white to dark gray and co-extensive with the enclosing sediments. The barite is thinnly laminated and fine grained barite is the only ore mineral.
