State-owned gold mine, exploring three deposits in the Laowangzhai field through open-pit operations.

The Zhenyuan deposit comprises the Laowangzhai and Donggualin ore clusters and several other smaller ore segments, such as the Daqiaoqing, Kudumu, and Langnitang segments, with over 100 t resources at 5.3 g/t. Most ore bodies of the deposit are stratiform, striped, lenticular, veined and irregular in shape. The ore bodies along the faults show embranchment, recombination and cluster. The host rocks with mineralization include the Upper Devonian Kudumu Formation composed of meta-quartz sandstone intercalated with sericite slate and siliceous slate, the Carboniferous Suoshan Formation dominated by carbonaceous slate and argillaceous marble, the Devonian ophiolitic meta-(ultra)mafic rock, Permo-Triassic quartz porphyry and Eocene lamprophyre. The proportion of gold tonnage in different lithologies is shown in Fig. 2b. In the Donggualin ore cluster, the meta-quartz sandstone, carbonaceous slate, quartz porphyry and lamprophyre separately contain 25.05%, 29.04%, 10.32% and 35.55% of ore tonnage in orebody III2, III3 and IV1 and the meta-quartz sandstone, carbonaceous slate, meta-(ultra)mafic rock and quartz porphyry occupy 31.07%, 23.33%, 44.50% and 1.09% in orebody SII1, SII2 and SIII3 of the Laowangzhai ore cluster.
Four paragenetic periods have been recognized in the Zhenyuan deposit. Period I includes minerals formed in diagenetic stage. Except lamprophyre which has quite amount of primary rock, nearly all of the host rocks have been altered by hydrothermal fluid. A copper-rich mineralization formed in meta-(ultra)mafic rock developing quartz–calcite–chalcopyrite–tetrahedrite–pyrite–sphalerite is also included in this period. Period II represents a later alteration including minor epidotization and chloritization, possibly arised from the regional metamorphism. Period III is the hydrothermal mineralization period and it can be subdivided into two stages (1 and 2). Stage 1 is the main gold mineralization stage, comprising carbonate (mainly dolomite and ankerite)–sericite–pyrite–arsenopyrite. Carbonate minerals are present as patches, spots or veins in all host rocks. Sericite occurs in mineral pseudomorph in quartz porphyry and lamprophyre or attaches to mineral particles in meta-quartz sandstone and meta-(ultra)mafic rock. Pyrite and minor arsenopyrite disseminate in altered host rocks. The alteration has bleached the host rocks, resulting in a change in color into green grey for lamprophyre, pale grey for meta-(ultra)mafic rock and quartz porphyry, brown for meta-quartz sandstone. Stage 2 is defined by stibnite-quartz veins cutting the altered meta-quartz sandstone and lamprophyre. Period IV is the post mineralization period dominated by carbonate-quartz veins.
