Bluff is a small town 30 kilometres south of Invercargill, at the very southern end of the South Island. It operates as a small port, and ferries travel from here to Stewart Island.
A surprising amount of information was found for the Bluff area, and neighbouring Greenhills to the north. The area was a favourite haunt for Invercargill rock collectors during the 1970's, and specimens may appear locally from these collections in future years.
The Bluff Hill area contains the hornblende rich Bluff Hill Gabbronorite, with the Greenhills Ultramafic Complex bordering immediately to the north. The rocks trend north north-west, and dip steeply west south-west.
This is intruded by several thick andesite dykes, innumerable thin hornblende microgabbro veins and dykes, some hornblende pegmatite veins, and diorite dykes.
The hornblende rich norite shows as the upper stage differentiation of basaltic magma. Olivine-hypersthene-magnetite intergrowths indicate hypersthene from olivine by oxidation, rather than directly from the magma. The area contains widespread iron-titanium oxides, iron and copper sulphides, but none in economic quantities.
