A Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag-Au mine located atop Mt Read, 6 miles (10km) South of Rosebery. The ore is similar to Rosebery (massive, pyrite-rich sulphide ore), but is more metamorphosed and deformed. The ore is hosted in Mount Read Volcanics.
Mining was mostly between 1894-1986, but there has been some small scale, mostly underground, mining at times since. Rehabilitation works began in 2004/2005, despite some some localised mining since. There are small exposures of the sulphides and gossan in open cuts and adits at the summit.
On an active mining lease and unauthorised entry is forbidden.
A syn-volcanic, submarine, hydrothermal deposit; part replacement of footwall permeable strata
Host Rock Ages Cambrian Series 3
Mineralisation Ages Cambrian
Form Stratiform, Volcanic massive sulphide
Rock Type volcaniclastic-igneous-rock and tephra
Commodities Zinc, Lead
Gangue Carbonate, Chlorite, Pyrite, Sericite, Quartz
Total Resource (Pre Mining) 31/12/2005
2570000 Tonnes
0.42% Cu
5.2% Pb
