Named in 1997 by Coombs et al., during a reorganization of zeolite species, for being sodium-dominant ferrierite. The root name is for Walter Frederick Ferrier [4 May 1865 Montréal, Québec, Canada – 15 November 1950 Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada], mineralogist, mining engineer, and geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada.
