Name:
The name hayelasdiite is based on the Cherokee word hayelasdi meaning blade, in reference to the blade-like habit of the mineral. The Cherokee are an indigenous people that, prior to the 18th century, were concentrated in the region surrounding the Redmond mine. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) still own and occupy a reservation that is headquartered in the town of Cherokee, North Carolina, about 36 km SW of the Redmond mine.
Hayelasdiite has a unique structure consisting of copper thiosulfate ribbons with inter-ribbon cubane-like Pb4(OH)4 units. It is the first mineral species with a protonated thiosulfate group (a monohydroxothiosulphate). Chemically comparable to steverustite (another thiosulfate mineral).

Classification of Hayelasdiite
The Pb4(OH)4 motif found in hayelasdiite. This structural unit is also found in, for example, hexathioplumbite and nitroplumbite. Hayelasdiite is interpreted to have a slightly modified version that is less hydroxylated for charge balance.
