The name reflects its sodium content and similarity to betpakdalite. First described by Skvortsova et al. (1971) as sodium betpakdalite, later renamed as natrobetpakdalite by Burke (2008). Redefined in 2010 by IMA and renamed as Betpakdalite-NaCa.
