Named in honor of Gerhard Tischendorf (25 December 1927, Treuen, Vogtland, German Empire - 10 December 2007, Zittau, Germany), geologist with the Central Geological Institute in Berlin and later the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth (ZIPE). He was a specialist in selenium deposits, who first described the mineral as an unknown species in 1958.
