Almanda Mine:
The mineralisation (copper) was first discovered in 1850 and the mine named Wheal Maria. The mine was worked during several periods and renamed Wheal Mary Anne Mine. In 1868, the silver was found in the ore and the Almanda Silver Mining Association was formed. Operations commenced in mid-1868 and ceased by 1870 after producing about 10,000 ounces (310 Kg) of silver an average grade of @ 1560 g/t. The mine was reworked periodically between 1877 and 1887. Detailed exploration including diamond drilling was conducted by the S.A. Department of Mines between 1968 and 1972. Mineralisation are located within the «Burra Group» Adelaide Geosyncline formations. Mineralisation occurs as sub-parallel veins within a fault-controlled ore zone 1–2 m wide and extending for ~850 m.
This site is now part of the Scott Creek Conservation Park.
