A very early mine worked initially for tin and then for tin and copper, although mainly for the latter. The original workings were by open trenches and excavations and must have been extensive as Borlase described the excavations here about 1760 as the largest he had ever seen.
There are records of tin being worked on "Relystyan Down" in 1502 and of "Relistian Tyn Work" in 1696. By the early 1700s there are records of copper ore being sold to merchants from Bristol and a new adit being driven, but the mine then closed soon after 1719 and remained dormant until about 1800. In 1803-04 a new shaft was driven and the sale of ore resumed but the mine then closed again in 1811 and remained dormant until around 1830 when it again began to work, although intermittently. During the final period of working in 1832-42 12,150 tons of copper ore (1032 tons of copper) were sold for £47,431. There is no record of sales of tin during this period. In 1842 the mine finally closed and the equipment including steam engines and water wheels were put up for sale. However, there is also a record of Relistian Consols producing 5 tons of black tin and 5 tons of mispickel in or after 1851 so some limited mining may have continued after this.
Several dumps on both sides of the road north from Wall are from the later working period.
