Wheal Maiden

This mine, which was also known as Wheal Maiden lies within the Camborne-Redruth-St Day mining district and is in Gwennap parish.

The mine is bounded on the south by Great Consolidated Mines, the actual boundary being the stream that flows through the valley (that now contains the old tailings dams constructed for use by the modern Mount Wellington Mine during its operation in the 1970's).

On the north it adjoins the Poldice sett.

Wheal Maid started as a stand alone operation until 1852 when it was incorporated into a group of mines known as St Day United Mines, at this point in time the group include Poldice Mine and the Carharrack Mine, by the year 1864 further mines comprising Wheal Gorland Mine, Wheal Unity Mine and the Creegbrawse & Penkevil Mine were also added to the group.

Wheal Maid was not linked to the Consols group to the south either by physical link of workings or incorporation.

More confusion has been created by the 1980's exploration project that was called the Wheal Maid Decline. This was sunk from a portal on the south side of the Valley to the west of Taylors Engine Shaft of Consols. Whilst being called the Wheal Maid Decline it did not enter the sett of that mine, nor is there any indication that it ever would have done.

It is recorded that five lodes were present in the mine being Tremaynes Lode, Martyns Lode, North Lode, South Lode and an unnamed lode.

The shafts of the mine lie on the valley slope between Goongumpas Lane and the stream in the valley bottom. Several of these are still visible marked by overgrown burrows (mine waste tips).

The OS grid reference marks the approximate central point of the workings of the mine.
