One of the deepest (1950 ft.) and most productive (18.7 million tons) iron mines in the region.

Mining began on the Youngstown property, consisting of E1/2-SE Sec. 19, W1/2-SW and SE-SW Sec. 20 T43N-R32W. The Youngstown Mine was opened in 1882 by Youngstown Iron Mining Co. and worked through 1897 by subsequent owners Florence Iron Mining Co. (1889) and Illinois Steel Co.

The Bristol Mine property (Claire at the time) was split from the Youngstown in 1889 by the Claire Iron Mining Co. The Bristol property consisted of E1/2-SE Sec. 19, T43N-R32W. Open-pit mining began in 1892. The Bristol Mining Co. assumed ownership in 1899.

In 1926, the Youngstown and Bristol Mines were re-united to form the Bristol-Youngstown Mine. The Bristol Mining Co. continued operations through 1933. The complex re-opened in 1950 and was worked through 1969 by Inland Steel.

The Bristol-Youngstown property description is E1/2-SE Sec. 19 and W1/2-SW Sec. 20 T43N-R32W, which is 160 acres between N46º6'5", N46º6'31", W88º20'28", and W88º21'6".
