Phoenix and Globe Mine

A gold-antimony mine, located just 100 metres from the city bowl district.

The mine was the second largest gold producer in Zimbabwe, estimated to have produced 104,880 Kg of gold with average grade of 27.6 grams per ton in 1833 tons of stibnite.

Outcropping reefs where first pegged in 1894.

The mine takes it's name from two original orebodies exploited, the Globe reef, a quartz vein enclosed in granite and the Phoenix has a complex network of quartz-filled fissures. Further veins encountered that had been emplaced during different periods 2645 and 2600 Ma have been named; Apple, East, Phoenix Main, North 1 and 2 reefs. These extensive workings where exploited to depths of 40 meters, to the water table.

Mineralization was hosted in structually controlled quartz veins in talc-carbonate schist and tonalitic gneiss, associated with extensive alteration accompanied by sericite and fuchsite. The veins occur at the contact between the Kwekwe ultramafic complex and the Rhodesdale granite-gneiss. Gold and antimony where the primary minerals extracted however the deposit was polymetallic.
