Vote for your favorite mineral in #MinCup26! - Sphalerite vs. Anorthite
Both zinc ore Sphalerite and calcium plagioclase feldspar Anorthite have perfect cleavage that will split cleanly if you hit them with a hammer, but only one can claim a larger split of your votes!

[www.geologyontario.mndmf.gov.on.ca] gives a report of some claim work around the Smart mine in 1993. Has a little mineralogy and a few maps.
As of Sept. 2013, there was a fee ($10/person) for collecting at this locality. For information on the Miller Property see online link below.

NOTE: No camp fires are allowed - Owner has advised several people if camp fires continue, the entire site will be shut down permanently - see https://www.mindat.org/mesg-570043.html
NOTE ALSO: The owner does not want anyone on the property during hunting season (November 3-17).

The following information on the Smart mine, in lot 31, concession X,
Sebastopol township, is taken from the reports by Willimott and Spence. It
was opened prior to 1880 and yielded a considerable quantity of phosphate.
Very fine crystals of zircon, titanite, and apatite have been found in a band of limestone. The zircons are of a brilliant hyacinth-red colour, and the titanite crystals are also very brilliant, being often translucent. Amazonite is reported to occur on this lot. (ARV53)

NOTE: Collectors may come across specimens labeled “Lost Mine, Eganville”. David K. Joyce, a seasoned Canadian collector, replied to my query about the “Lost Mine” with the following:
"The newer workings in the proximity of the Smart Mine were named “the Lost Mine” back in the 90’s or so when they were opened up. The late Bill Plavac and people in the CCFMS named it that as different from but in proximity to the old Smart Mine workings. They, the Walker Club and others hired Keith Miller to clear off sections of it and it has been the most collected area in the last couple of decades. I was first taken there by Bill Plavac and, still think of it as Lost Mine, next to the Smart Mine. The old Smart Mine working always seemed to be “way over there” and a separate place.
In retrospect, though, the Lost and Smart Mine and for that matter, the Meany Mine, are all part of the same vein dyke cluster and the lost mine probably should have been just considered as an extension of the Smart Mine, instead of separate."
