Andalusite
Formula: Al2(SiO4)O
Habit: Acicular, bladed. Occasionally in loose, radiating clusters. Cross-sections of crystals show some signs of cruciform colour zoning.
Colour: White, pale cream to buff.
Description: Cleaved fragments of the local metamorphosed mudstones and shales occasionally contain copious amounts of andalusite crystals grown in random orientation parallel with the rock cleavage. Weathering of the fragments develops the visibility of the andalusite, and areas where the grystals have been broken may be seen in the edges of the fragments. Cross sections of crytals show a distinct diamond-shape and larger crystals show some degree of cruciform colour zoning. Crystals to about 12mm length, 1mm across. identified visually and by inference from the geology and metamorphism of the sediments.
