Gibson Road Western occurrence


The Bear Lake Diggings were, prior to 2016, the first publicly protected collecting site in the Province of Ontario. In 2016, it was sold, and the new owner has closed the area to collectors.

The large amphibole and fluorapatite crystals are found in narrow "vein-dykes" emplaced in rocks of the Glamorgan complex, consisting mostly of gneiss amphibolite and marble. The vein-dykes are steep and sub-parallel and run approximately east-west. They are typically 1-2 m across.

Note on the mineral list:

The list of amphiboles for this locality is based on the microprobe analyses and normalizations provided by Hawthorne et al. (2006) and the guidelines provided in Hawthorne et al. (2012) amphibole nomenclature report. Even though the analysed amphibole samples (euhedral crystals to 5 cm) were relatively homogenous, it is possible that other amphiboles with richterite/katophorite root names are present at the locality. The amphiboles from here are normally labelled with a katophorite root name, and this is reflected in the uploaded photos of amphiboles from this locality. It is however quite likely that some photos show richterite root name amphiboles rather than katophorite root name amphiboles.
